10 Fun Halloween Movies For People Who Hate Horror Films

Hello, lovelies! Happy October. May I just say that I love Halloween. It’s probably my favorite holiday. Most immigrant parents don’t celebrate or even get American holidays, but my mom did something for all of them (Except for Christmas because she’s Muslim). She always went all-out for Halloween. She’d throw a party, decorate, invite our friends and neighbors, it was always so fun, which is why I have very fond memories of the holiday.

Another thing you should know about me is that I can’t stand horror movies. Just watching the trailers creep me out. It’s not that watching horror movies give me nightmares or anything. I just don’t enjoy them. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, so here are ten non-horror films you can watch this month.

1.//Corpse Bride

This is easily my favorite Tim Burton movie. Victor and Victoria have an arranged marriage and didn’t meet until the day before their wedding. They are quite taken with each other but during the rehearsal, Victor keeps messing up his vows. He ends up walking through a forest practicing them and through a hilarious stream of events that I won’t spoil here, he ends up marrying a corpse. The story goes on from there. It’s really good. My description didn’t give it justice. It’s on Netflix and YouTube, so you should check it out. It’s not that long.

2.//Halloweentown

Anyone who grew up with Disney Channel in the 2000s knows about this movie. There are four of them and I think they get better with each sequel. Basically, three kids find out that their mom is a witch from a land called Halloweentown, which is a land full of enchanted creatures, and have to help their grandmother save it. That’s the premise of the first and second movie. The third and fourth go into different plotlines. It’s a fun movie to watch if you’re feeling nostalgic.

3.//The Nightmare Before Christmas

This is the staple Halloween Disney movie. If you haven’t heard of it, you’ve been living under a rock. Jack Skelington is the Pumpkin King of Halloween but is getting bored with the repeating traditions of the holiday. He finds doorways to other holidays. He comes across Christmas and decides to steal it. The rest of the movie follows that premise.

(There are debates on whether this is a Christmas or Halloween movie. I personally consider it a Halloween movie, but to each their own.)

4.//Coraline

When I was a kid, I didn’t think this movie was scary at all. People would tell me it was creepy after watching it, but I didn’t get it. I watched it again recently, and boy do I get it now. I don’t even know where to begin to describe this movie to you. It’s pretty disturbing. I do not recommend watching it before you sleep. Here’s the trailer.

5.//The Book Of Life

This is such an underrated movie. I thought it was really good. It’s about a bullfighter who refused to kill a bull and brought shame to his family. He ends up getting poisoned and sent to the land of the dead. I’m sure Coco will overshadow it as a Day Of The Dead movie when it comes out, but I still think this movie is good. The animation is very unique.

6.//Twitches

Twin witches, Tia and Tamara Mowry, are separated at birth and sent to the human world. Both grow up in vastly different environments and find each other on their 21st birthday. They must go back to the magical world they were from to save their birth mother from the Darkness. This sounds really cheesy (and it really is) when I write it, but it’s a good movie. (Better DCOM than Descendents in my opinion.)

7.//Charlie Brown: The Great Pumpkin

I’m a bit old for Charlie Brown now, but I got so excited when we’d watch it in class as a kid. Movies during school days were always fun, but Charlie Brown has a soft spot in my childhood memories. Do I even need to give a summary of this? If you haven’t seen it, you’ve been living under a rock. (Or just not in the U.S.) I’m sure it can be found on YouTube, but it’s always on T.V. in the month of October.

8.//Monster House

Super underrated movie. There is a house that starts mysteriously kidnapping children when they get on its lawn. Only the kid who lives across the street knows, but no one believes him. He and his friends try to find a way to destroy the abandoned house before Halloween to prevent children from trick or treating there. It’s a really cool movie and the backstory behind the Haunted House is very different. I think it’s worth watching.

9.//The Haunted Mansion

I loved this movie as a kid. I haven’t seen it in years, but I want to again. It stars Eddie Murphy. He’s a real estate agent who is called to sell a mansion during his family vacation. What was meant to be a short pitstop ended up being a crazy adventure because Eddie Murphy’s wife was thought to be the dead lover of a ghost named Elizabeth. Their kids were kidnapped in order to blackmail her into marrying the dead head of household.

10.//Hotel Transylvania

This movie surprised me. I thought it was going to be crap when the trailers came out, but I really liked it. It’s about Dracula who runs a hotel for monsters. His daughter just turned 118 and wants to see the world, but he convinces her that humans are evil. A human manages to get inside the hotel despite all the security measures, which causes a bunch of chaos.

I’m definitely going to watch some of these this month and I hope you’ll check them out. That’s it for now. Until next time!
