Day In Life Of A Commuting College Freshman

I love reading “day in life” posts. It’s really interesting to see how people spend their days. Since I’ve just finished my first semester of college, I decided to write about a typical day would be like last semester. The reason I’ve waited until now to publish this is that people knowing where I am at certain times is pretty creepy. It made more sense to wait until the semester was over.

My days varied each day based on my classes and work I had to do, so this post would be a typical Wednesday for me last semester. I hope you enjoy.

//8:00 – Wake Up/Get Ready

I keep my alarm clock across the room. Otherwise, I’d never get out of bed. By 8:00, my brothers are at school and my mom is already out,  so I have the house to myself (My dad is usually asleep). Since I have the house to myself, I get ready in the living room while watching T.V.

I make homemade waffles for breakfast nearly every weekday. My mom leaves the pre-made batter in the fridge, so I don’t usually have to make it myself. It takes less than a minute to use the waffle maker, so breakfast is pretty easy.

It takes me around 20 minutes to get ready. After that, I usually pack my bag and my lunch, then relax and watch t.v. I don’t like being rushed in the morning.

//9:00 – Leave House

I leave the house at around 9. By this time, traffic has let up, so I’m able to get to the train station pretty quickly. It takes less than 20 minutes to get there. I listen to audiobooks on the way.

Interesting thing to know about me: I only listen to books I’ve read before because I’m afraid that I’ll get distracted by a plot twist in a book I’ve never read before and get in an accident. This probably wouldn’t happen, but better safe than sorry.

//9:24 – Get On The Train

The train leaves at 9:24. I keep the Marta On The Go app on my phone so that I know when the trains and buses are leaving. It also tells me when there are train delays, which are the worst. For those of you who don’t know, Marta is Atlanta’s public transportation system.

This is the only time of day I read for fun. If I have an exam that day, I’ll study, but most days I read. This has been my favorite part of college because I wasn’t able to read much during high school. This has become my designated reading time.

(Complete side note: I’m watching my baby cousin watching a Wiggles concert on Facebook Live in Austrailia. She is so excited. Who out there remembers the Wiggles?)

//10:00 – Walk To Library and Study

Since my classes start so late, I like to come in an hour early to do the next day’s homework. Otherwise, I’d stay home and watch T.V. or sleep in. I study much more productively on campus. The library is near the building my next two classes are, so I usually studied there instead of in a study lounge on Wednesdays.

//11:00 -12:50 – Classes

I have two classes in the morning, World Religions and English II. There is a ten-minute break in between them. I usually talk with my friend Kelsey, with whom I have both classes with.

//12:50-1:20 – Lunch Break

Sometimes I eat lunch with a friend, but I usually watch an episode of a show on Netflix or catch up on blogs while I eat. It’s a nice mental break in the middle of the day. I watched a lot of How I Met Your Mother last semester.

//1:20 – 1:50 – Do Some Work

I don’t usually have as much time on Wednesdays to do work at school. Maybe half an hour depending on whether or not I go to the gym (which I normally do go to). I may work on a blog post or finish reading at this time.

//1:50 – Head To The Gym

I head to the gym at around 1:50 and change my clothes. By the time I’m done, the class starts.

RelatedMy Current College Workout Routine

//2:00-2:45 – Gym Class

On Wednesdays, I take a Zumba class. This is my favorite gym class because of the music and the instructor. I don’t enjoy the other Zumba classes as much, so I usually only go to the Wednesday ones and do another workout other days.

The class is 50 minutes, but I leave five minutes early so that I can change and run to class.

//2:50 – 3:00 – Run To Class

I change out of my gym clothes before class out of respect for my teacher. I feel sorry for the people who sit next to me because I must stink from being covered in sweat (Both from working out and running to the other side of campus for class)

//3:00 – 4:15 – Class

This is my Psychology class. It’s in a really cold lecture hall, so I’m shivering by the end of it. It’s an interesting class and I enjoy it. I’m not counting down the minutes for it to end.

//4:15 – 4:30 – Walk To Station + Wait For Train

My speed heading towards the station depends on what time classes end. If the train is coming soon, I’ll run, but if it’s a lost cause, I’ll take the scenic route. Now that it’s cold, I usually head to the station as quickly as possible, but I don’t like sitting around waiting for the train. I usually time it so that I don’t have to.

//4:30 – 5:10 – Read on Train

Like I said before, this is my daily reading time.

//5:10 – 5:45 – Drive Home

I found a shortcut home, so it usually doesn’t take this long to get home anymore. I can avoid the traffic. I listen to audio-books, music, or just sing while I drive.

//5:45 – 6:30 – Take Break + Eat Dinner

I eat dinner once I get home. This is usually when the exhaustion sets in. I’ll lay on the couch and watch T.V. or hang out with my family.

//6:30 – 7:00 – Take Shower

I take a shower every other day. If I don’t shower that day, I’ll go straight to doing school work.

//7:00 – 10:00 – Do School Work

I try to finish all my required homework while I’m on campus. If I don’t, I’ll finish now, then study for upcoming exams or work on a project. (I had an exam every week). After I’m done, I’ll work on a blog post, then procrastinate by reading blogs and scrolling through Pinterest (Though I’ve gotten a lot better at avoiding that)

//10:00 – 10:30 – Get Ready For Bed

I start getting ready for bed at around 10. I change my clothes, brush my teeth and say goodnight to everyone.

//10:30 – 11:00 – Read

I read for 15-30 minutes on my Kindle, after I turn off the lights. It helps me wind down. I usually read e-books from the library, blog posts, or fanfiction (mostly fanfiction, recently)

//11:00 – Go To Sleep

I try to get 8 hours of sleep every night. I have to wake up at 7 on Thursdays, so I try to be asleep before 12 the day before.

So, that would’ve been a typical day for me last semester.  I hope you’ve enjoyed.

  1. I definitely agree with you, Day-in-the-Life posts are so interesting to read, and yours was no different. You have such a balanced schedule, I’m kind of jealous. And, definitely try to hold on to the bed time, your body will thank you for it!

    My days are so hectic, I have to pencil outings with friends into my schedule in order to make sure I have time for them!

    1. The fact that I don’t live on campus helps. My parents don’t bother me about a curfew or anything, so that has nothing to do with it. I just go to sleep after everyone else because the house is quiet and I’m tired. (Except my dad, who stays up till 2 AM because he works from home and doesn’t have work until noon the next day)
