February Favorites 2017 (Books, Movies, Music, Etc.)

I’ve been considering doing this for a while. I wanted to add what books I read and what songs were stuck in my head to my monthly goals posts but decided that those could fit into a category of their own. At the end of each month, I’ll publish a “monthly favorites” post which will include books I’ve read, TV shows I’ve watched, etc. If you don’t like these kinds of posts, that’s fine. This is more for me to look back on than for you. More college-centric posts to come.

//Books

  • A Series Of Unfortunate Events By Lemony Snicket (Books 5-8) Audio Books – So before the series came out on Netflix last month, I decided to read the first four books (which were the books shown in Season 1). I don’t remember anything from those books because I read them 9 years ago. It piqued my interest again, but instead of reading them, I’ve been listening to the audiobooks on my commute. to school. After I finish listening to this series, I think I’m gonna “re-read” (listen to) the Harry Potter series. That ought to be fun.
  • When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon – This book doesn’t come out until the end of May, but I got ahold of the advanced reader’s copy, so I was able to read it early. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. I’m not really into those types of books, but it was pretty good. It’s an easy read. I finished it in two days (partially because I was procrastinating on homework). It’s in the point of view of two Indian Americans who are arranged to be married. Rishi is more traditional and wants to get an arranged marriage, while Dimple doesn’t, which is why her parents never told her. They meet at a coding camp when Rishi finds out that Dimple doesn’t know who he is.
  • Simon Vs. The Homosapien Agenda by Becky Albertalli – I’ve been meaning to read this book for a long time, but haven’t gotten ahold of it. I finished it in like two or three days, I can’t remember. I really liked that the setting was Atlanta. It talked a lot about being gay in the south and the differences that come with being in the city and in this suburbs. The weirdest thing of all is that I recognized the obscure references that others wouldn’t understand. It made the book all more amusing. (The reason I decided to read it now was that the movie is coming out this year). This book is about Simon getting blackmailed into coming out.
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – The only reason I’m adding this books is that it’s the reason I haven’t read that many books. My friend has been telling me to read this book for a long time, so I decided to get it. I just could not get through it. I just reread sentences over and over again until I put my headphones on to listen to music or a podcast on the train. That is how my first two weeks of February were spent. It’s just not written well. It doesn’t explain the magical world and kept stating made up words without explaining them. My friend later told me that this was the fourth book and that the first three weren’t worth reading (She hasn’t even read them and this is her favorite book). After that, I was done. If it takes three books to get to the point, I’m not reading it. I finished two books in a week after I stopped reading this book. It just wasn’t my cup of tea (or it was just poorly written). Okay. Rant over.

//Movies

I didn’t really watch many movies this month, which is funny because the Oscar’s were yesterday and there are so many good movies in theaters. I’m going to watch La La Land this week. I don’t think I’ll like it, but there’s a free screening at my school and I want to see what all the hype is about.

Storks – I lost interest in watching this movie until I saw this video. I laughed so hard that I decided to rent it from Redbox. My brother had been asking about it too, so I didn’t see why not. We watched it together and as far as non-Disney animated movies go, it was fine. I wouldn’t watch it again if I had the choice. You should just watch the video of clips I linked for you.

Ender’s Game – I read the book in middle school and it was on Freeform this weekend, so I decided to watch. It came out a while ago, but I never checked it out. Overall, it follows the book really well. I enjoyed it, but only because I read the book. I don’t think others would. I kept thinking of Star Wars while I was watching it and couldn’t think of why until I realized that Harrison Ford (Han Solo) was an actor in the movie. I was really racking my brain there. I felt like an idiot.

//TV Shows

I don’t start any new shows until school breaks because I don’t want to get obsessed and binge watch 9 seasons when I have work. I usually just watch new episodes as they come out every week. Season 4 of The 100  started this month. I’ve been pretty much watching it since it came out. My dad and I love these types of Sci-Fi shows, so we both watched it together. We didn’t like the third season (I stopped watching in the middle of it and finished it when it came to Netflix), but this season has me obsessed again. It may become my new favorite season (After Season 2, of course)

I’m actually interested in reading the books now. I was a bit iffy on that because I had watched the show already, but then I heard that the books are nothing like the show, so I ordered the first three from the library. I’ll probably talk about them this month. What really piqued my interest was the fact that they started filming Season 1 before the book was officially published. They decided to create a show based on just the advanced reader’s copy before most people had heard of it.  I’m pretty sure I won’t like them as much because I’ve watched the show, but I’ll try to keep an open mind.

Also, for those of you who watched Jane The Virgin this month understand my sadness over what happened. I won’t give you spoilers, but Gina Rodriquez’s acting was so good. Her reaction was heartbreaking.

//Music

These are just the songs that have been stuck in my head the most. (Like, played on repeat for days)

  • Runnin’ (Lose It All)  by the Naughty Boys Ft. Beyonce – This song got stuck in my head because it was in the Everything Everything trailer. I really liked the book, so when the trailer popped up on my YouTube feed, I immediately clicked it.

//YouTube

I haven’t really had a particular YouTuber I’ve been watching more this month. I feel like there have been themes in these last few. I was obsessed with Tasty videos in November. I followed Disneycember in December and 100 Days and Mr.Kate in January. I haven’t really been on Youtube that much this February. We’ll see if that changes next month.

//Food and Drink

Soup. That’s all I can say. The pollen count went from like 0 to 500 within a day, so there was this one week where my throat was sore and I couldn’t breathe through my nose. It was AWFUL!!! I’ve had severe environmental allergies my entire life, but I seem to forget how hard Spring is on me every year. I’ve adjusted to it now, but that entire week, I ate soup every day. I bought it for lunch at school (The guy at the counter knows me now) and my mom made chicken gnocchi soup (The Olive Garden Recipe) twice that week (My brothers and dad were suffering along with me).

That’s the food item that particularly stood out this month, as you can see.

//Priceless

  • Old Friends – I literally saw all my close middle school friends this month. It was amazing. There’s nothing like being with people who understand ALL your looks. It’s also been a while since I’ve interrogated someone’s new boyfriend, so that was fun.
  • Windy Days – Georgia barely experienced Winter this year, but the wind has made it colder. The weather this month, in particular, has been wonderful. It’s been extremely windy, which I love. At one point, I felt like I was about to be blown away because of how much there was. Nothing clears my mind more than a windy day.

This may become a monthly thing. I hope you liked it.

  1. Aaaah, I love monthly favorites posts! This was an awesome read, especially your books section; I’m definitely going to look into the books you mentioned. Btw, where do you get your audiobooks from? I want to get into them, but sometimes my mind starts wandering and I realize that I’m not really listening at all, lol.

    And the last “Priceless” section warmed my heart to no end. Sometimes we get caught up in material things and we forget how much we love simple things!

    1. Thanks. I usually get my audiobooks from the library. They’re free and I can just put them in the CD player of my car. I zone out too sometimes. I either rewind it or just turn it off if I can’t focus. I hope that helped. (Sorry for the late reply)
