10 Ways I Refocus Myself During The Day

Everyone gets distracted, right? Some of us can’t sit at a desk and work for 5 straight hours. (I know I can’t.) Being a college student and a blogger, I tend to sit at my desk a lot and sometimes it’s hard to stay focused. Here are some ways I refocus myself during the day.

//Adjust The Temperature

My mother always complains about how I change the thermostat every day. My body gets warm a bit more than hers I guess because I’m always sweating when she controls it. May I just say that you’re not supposed to keep a house at 80 degrees every day. That’s not normal.

If I’m ever losing focus and it’s warm, turning down the thermostat always helps me gain back my focus. The same goes the other way around. If it’s cold, I just turn on a space heater or put on a sweater. The change in temperature helps me focus better.

//Take A Shower

I love taking a shower. I think it’s because it’s the only quiet alone time I get all day. I live in an old house with thin walls with 7 people, so there is a lot of noise. Being alone with my thoughts while water streams down my back always quiets my mind. Besides, the reason I couldn’t focus was probably that there were too many people talking, anyway.

//Eat A Snack

I am very guilty of this one. I snack too much for my own good. I’m surprised I’m as thin as I am. Chewing gum also helps. I always keep easy snacks on hand like dried fruit, chocolate chips, and cheese sticks, otherwise, I’d eat way more junk food. Hunger is distracting, so eating something small to curb my appetite helps.

On the other hand, sometimes I’m so consumed in what I’m doing, I forget to eat. It goes both ways.

//Drink A Big Glass Of Water

I don’t get why people don’t drink enough water. I’ve heard people practically brag about it as if they have a superpower. Dehydration is scary guys. That headache you’re having is probably because you haven’t drinken water that day.

If I find myself dozing off or procrastinating, I get a tall glass of water and drink it all in one sitting. I feel re-energized right away.

//Open Or Close The Blinds

I try to keep my window open as long as possible, but if I’m losing focus, changing the lighting in the room helps. Now that it’s summer, I sometimes forget to open my blinds in the morning, but I open them once I get to work. I feel motivated immediately.

The same goes for when school is in session and I do work in the evenings. Closing my blinds reminds me that it’s evening and that I need to get my work done so I can go to sleep.

//Clean My Room

I cannot focus when my bed isn’t made. I just can’t do it. Before I can do anything in my room, even if it’s watching Netflix on my laptop, I have to make my bed. Just doing that one task makes my room look so much more put together. Even if there are clothes that aren’t folded and books overflowing on the bookshelf, a made bed makes a room look cleaner.

If I’m ever tired of doing an assignment, I just get up and get some cleaning done. I fold some clothes, organize my desk, etc. Once I get back to my computer, I’m focused enough to get homework done.

//Change Of Scenery

I wrote in a recent post that I’ve been blogging at the library a lot this summer. This is because there is only so much time I can spend in my house. I procrastinate significantly more when I’m at home, which is one of the reasons I always tried to get my homework done on campus last year. I associate my home more with relaxing than work.

Obviously, I can’t do this all the time, but even moving my work station to the dining room helps. It’s amazing what a change of scenery can do.

//Exercise

I know what y’all are thinking: “Ugh.”

I was this person for the longest time. Until last August, I would’ve been with you. Since starting college, I’ve been working out more and have incorporated it into my daily routine. After working out, I always feel more motivated to get more work done because I’ve already crossed a big thing off my to-do list. Even now in the summer, I’m more productive after I go to the gym in the evenings because I feel so focused.

Say whatever you want, but exercise works.

//Start A Timer

There are days where I just want to lay in bed and do nothing. Just read and watch YouTube videos. But life doesn’t work that way. Whenever I’m in one of these moods, I just set a timer for one hour and tell myself I can do nothing else but work on whatever I need to be working on.

This method works ridiculously well. Just having a timer in front of me makes me so much more efficient than I would be without one. I get so much more work done that way.

//Procrastinate A Bit

I bet no one has ever given you this advice before. I know all my previous advice has been about being productive and getting all your work done, but sometimes you need a break. So long as I don’t waste an hour of my life, I give myself some leeway to read blogs and watch a video. Taking a break can boost your creativity and give you much-needed relaxation time. You can get back to your work later.

I hope this post motivated you to get some work done. Until next time.

  1. I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your
    website. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues?
    A handful of my blog visitors have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome.

    Do you have any ideas to help fix this problem?
