First Week Of Online Graduate School | Life Update

Hello, lovelies! This week was my first week of  graduate school, and I wanted to document it  like I did when I started college. That original post was a lot more helpful than this one. I don’t have any practical advice to give right now. I just want to talk about how strange this week has been and how I feel.

//Classes

I’m really excited about all of my classes. I’m interested in every topics we’re discussing and it will be useful for my career longterm. The best part about grad school is definitely that there are no filler classes. I’m a little worried about the workload, mainly because it’s all online, but also because I have a lot of big projects I don’t understand yet. I’m mentally panicking that I’ll miss an assignment that I simply didn’t know about, so organization is going to be a big priority this semester.

Half of my classes are through Zoom lectures and the other half are asynchronous. That means that I get a bunch of work and videos to watch each week without a specific class time. I can do the work whenever I want. I just need to turn everything in on time.

Overall, I’m more worried about the in-person classes. When we switched to online learning in spring, there were only one live video calls in March to explain what we needed to do. All of my classes just gave me due dates and reading schedules, so I was able to organize my time any way I wanted. The reason that I’m worried about the Zoom lectures is that I can see myself zoning out or getting distracted by other things during class time. It already happened a few times last week. That wasn’t a huge deal since it was syllabus week, but I can’t afford to do that when classes truly start.

//Getting Organized

I was very much going through the motions last week when it came to school. I didn’t start getting fully organized until today. I literally didn’t buy my textbooks until a few hours ago.

I’ve already finished my syllabus list for the entire semester and made a study plan for this week. The trick is to follow it. I’m not completely done organizing all my assignments, so I plan on really getting my life together this week. I’m already starting to feel less stressed.

//Evening Classes

All of my classes are in the evening, which makes sense since most people in graduate school have full-time jobs. I don’t mind having evening classes. It gives me time to exercise and get other things done throughout the day. Plus, I’ll be able to work more. My only problem with not having class until 4:30 is that I don’t have reason to get up in the morning. I’ve already fixed my sleep schedule, but morning classes would’ve been a great motivator.

//Overall

I’m not really that excited about graduate school. It kind of doesn’t feel real because it’s all online. It’s like taking a very expensive Skill Share class to pass quarantine time, even though it’s useful. I think once I get a routine going, it’ll be fine. Normally, I enjoy school, but I’m not as excited about online grad school since I hadn’t planned on going for another year at least. It’s also just not as fun.

My current plan of action is to write out all my assignments into a calendar and not fail. That sounds easy enough 🙂 Until next time!
