Anything But Books Tag (AKA Answering Random Questions Because I Haven’t Blogged In A Week)

Berlin, Germany

Hello, lovelies! I am in such a blogging rut. I’ve been writing a travel blog post these past two weeks but haven’t been feeling it because of quarantine. I have felt that way about blogging in general because I don’t want to write about quarantine ALL THE TIME.

I’ve been writing about books a lot lately, which is fine, but I don’t want this to be just a book blog. There will probably be some “entertainment-centric” content soon because that’s honestly what I’ve been doing all this time, but I just wanted to chat for a bit. These questions seemed fun, so I thought I would give it a go. I’m hoping that hitting the publish button for something will motivate me to finish my other blog post.

1.//Name a cartoon you love?

I mean, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been my favorite show since it came out when I was in elementary school. I can legit remember specific moments in my childhood based on when episodes of that show came out. It’s been getting a lot of love now that it’s on Netflix (which is great!) and I’ve finally convinced all my close friends to watch it. It’s been great. This has actually been a theme in quarantine.

I love cartoons. We only had cable during summer and winter break growing up, so I would always watch Arthur, Cyberchase, and Maya & Miguel after school. I was a giant math nerd, so Cyberchase was my favorite. I’ve rewatched Kim Possible and Danny Phantom in college, and am ridiculously excited about the new Phineas and Ferb movie coming out next week.

2.//What is your favorite song right now?

I was just listening to Born To Die by Lana Del Rey then went through her whole music video playlist. Yesterday, I did the same with Eminem. My favorite song in general is Saturn by Sleeping At Last.

I think for most people, their “quarantine album” is going to be either Hamilton or Folklore. Even though I’ve been listening to both a lot, the album I’ll probably associate with quarantine is Blue Neighborhood by Troye Sivan. He is an artist that I have been sleeping on for years. I don’t really have a preference when it comes to music genre. I just love music with meaningful lyrics, so that entire album was perfect. I’ve been listening to that album since April, and have listened to nearly every song on repeat by now. It’s amazing. I love it. Here’s the short film for three songs on the album. I highly recommend it.

3.//What could you do for hours that isn’t reading?

Talk to my friends. Write. Sleep. Definitely sleep. I am not a morning person. I write a lot about productivity and time management, but I am one of the few bloggers who don’t advocate for waking up at 5 AM. Doing that every single day for even a month sounds like my personal definition of hell. I’ve made my friends laugh about my quarantine schedule.

Last week, I woke up at 7:30 AM almost every day, and I got the same amount of stuff done. I’m a pretty productive person in general, but waking up early didn’t make a difference. I liked having more daylight, but it honestly just gave me more time to twiddle my thumbs. When I work or school, it’s fine because I have somewhere to be, but I am going to enjoy sleeping in until at least ten while I can.

4.//What is something you love to do that your followers would be surprised by?

I am very cynical. I don’t think that comes across much in my blog, but I really am. I was having a conversation with one of my cousins in February talking/semi-joking about what was the point in having kids or starting a retirement account since we’re all going to die in the apocalypse anyway and social security isn’t going to exist. (This was before the pandemic BTW).

I don’t think people realize this because I’m very much a glass half full person, but I think I’m just a happy realist. Whenever someone has a terrible day, I say, “At least the sun came up this morning. If it hadn’t, our blood would’ve frozen over and that sounds painful.” I know that the world is not going to end well, so I may as well enjoy it while I can and have a retirement account just in case.

Sometimes both go hand in hand. Whenever my friends and I feel down about politics, we just say, “It doesn’t matter anyway because climate change.”

5.//What is your favorite unnecessarily specific thing to learn about?

I couldn’t think of anything at first, but I think I would pick homemaking. Just homemaking as a general concept. I search up articles about cleaning, organizing, and living a “simple life” all the time. It’s just fun for me to read about how people clean and decorate their homes, make their own laundry detergent, balance their time, etc. I enjoy reading things like that.

6.//What is something unusual you know how to do?

Honestly, nothing. I am just generally mediocre at most things. Art, writing, singing, dancing, etc. I guess I’m good at not binge-watching shows. I used to be really bad at that, but I instated a rule where I couldn’t start any new shows during the school year, which stopped me from wasting my time. Then quarantine hit and I started a bunch of new shows and learned that I have enough self-control now to turn off the T.V. after one or two episodes. That’s an unusual skill to have now-a-days.

7.//Name something you made in the last year and show us if you can.

I started and finished a bullet journal in less than three months. I got one at the beginning of quarantine, and from March-May I painted in it, drew, made collages, wrote many journal entries and short stories, and used it as a planner. I personally didn’t like the dot grid as a planner, but I loved the creative aspects of it. I still flip through it all the time because it contains so much of my creative energy from the first few months of quarantine.

8.//What is your most recent personal project?

I’ve been thinking about finishing and editing the “book” I wrote in my senior year of high school that I told very few friends about. I never finished it and it will definitely never be published because people in my life will think it’s about them, event though it’s not. I wrote about a Bengali girl who had an arranged marriage before she started college to someone who did not speak English well. And it wasn’t an arranged marriage where she really had a choice. It was very sudden, and the book was about what happened after. Getting to know him, getting past their language barrier, falling in love, how it affected her college experience, etc.

It was a unique concept back then because diverse books really did not exist yet, and I’m sure I’m going to have to fix A LOT,  but I’ve been thinking about finishing it. I may just scrap the idea and write something else because most of what I write would be based on research and not personal experience (obviously) but I guess that’s how most writers write. We’ll see what happens. You guys will never know though because that book will never see the light of day.

9.//Tell us something you think about often

I think about the future ALL THE TIME. Not in the way that most do. I mainly think about what happens when my parents die. As I’ve mentioned before, my brother has very severe non-verbal autism and will need to be taken care of for the rest of his life. I think about finances, how that’s going to affect my marriage or my children, how I travel, how my other brother and I are going to divide our responsibilities, and even what happens when only one of my parents is alive because they literally can’t take care of my brother alone. I realize this sounds extreme, but it’s a pretty common thought among special needs siblings. My brother Zidan is eighteen and in a long-distance relationship, but he has had to have the conversation with his girlfriend that she would have to move here for their relationship to work long term. It’s just one of those background things in both of our minds all the time.

10.//Give us something that is your favorite

My favorite movie is Back To The Future.

11.//Say the first thing that pops into your head.

Water.

God…I don’t want to edit this.

Well, that’t it for now. I hope you enjoyed this chatty little blog post. I have plenty more planned, but this one just seemed like a fun way to tide me over. I will edit this tomorrow when I’m not tired, but if you read it the night I publish it, you’ll get to read my stream of consciousness with typos. Have fun!

  1. Umm…first of all I hope you don’t have pre-conceived judgements about music that’s not in English. Because I am going to make you a music recommendation. You may or may not have heard about BTS- a 7 member korean boyband (not your typical boyband) . Since you mentioned that you like troye sivan’s music and songs that have meaningful lyrics I’m gonna recommend you one of their songs. They have alot of songs with meaningful lyrics talking about a wide variety of topics like self-love, the unfairness of today’s society, being trapped by the dreams told to us by others and some of their songs even have aspects of psychology. They also have alot of diverse songs from different genres so I dare say you will be able to find even a few songs that you like. They also recently co-wrote a song with troye sivan on their last album called louder than bombs. You may like to check it out:)

    1. Thanks for the recommendation! One of my cousins is really into K-Pop, so I’ve listened to a bunch of their songs. Their Carpool Karaoke with James Corden is hilarious!
