How I’m Doing On My 2019 Goals | Autumn Check-In

Overall, life has been pretty routine these last few months. Lots of studying, working, and spending time with family and friends. Lots of thoughts and plans about the future. I’m gearing up for a lot of events at the end of the year and preparing for what life after graduation holds. 2019 has been a doozy of a year, and I can’t imagine how the next three months can hold up to the first nine, but it looks like things are coming.

Previous 2019 Goals Updates:

1.//Go On 3 Trips On My Own [Travel To Europe]

PROGRESS SO FAR

I haven’t gone on any trips on my own since coming back from Europe in June, and I’m fine with that. That month took a lot out of me and I don’t plan on taking another long term trip until December. A potential international trip opportunity came up recently for December through my school. The prospect of it is very exciting, but I haven’t made any decisions yet. You guys will probably hear about if it ends up happening.

GOAL REFRESH – GO ON 3 TRIPS

If I don’t go on that aforementioned international trip in December, I probably won’t go on another trip on my own till spring break. I’m fifty percent sure I’m going to go, but things are kind of up in the air right now (I’m writing this early, so it may have been resolved by the time you read this). I am, however, going on my first cruise with my family. It’ll be our first time out of the country together, so it’ll be Mysoon and Zidan’s (my brothers’) first time out of the country. I’ll probably write a post on what it’s like taking someone with autism on a cruise, so stay tuned for that. We’re going to Mexico, and a bunch of our cousins are coming on the trip with us. I’m super excited, but the timing cuts really close to the other trip I want to take. We’ll see what happens. December may end up being a crazier travel month than May.

2.//Prioritize My Health

PROGRESS SO FAR

The most important part of this goal for me initially was to stop my chronic back pain, and I’m happy to report that I haven’t worn my back brace in four months. I’m so thankful for that because the back pain was hindering my quality of life. There was a little bit of pain during the first few days of school because I was spending so much time sitting, but it was barely noticeable (NOTHING like it was a year ago)

I started working out regularly and lifting weights again. I’m super happy with where my health is right now. The only thing I want to work on is eating more vegetables. I did not eat enough of them while my mom was gone, which is carrying over to dorm life in general.

(I also filled in all my cavities over the summer 🙂

GOAL REFRESH – Prioritize My Health

  • Exercise 4-5 days per week
  • Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
  • Go to all your doctor’s appointments

Like I said before, getting rid of my back pain was the biggest factor of this goal. Now that it’s gone, I just want to prioritize my health in general ways by exercising five days per week and eating healthy food. I don’t want to lose weight or look a certain way. I just want to feel healthy and eat well in moderation. I definitely need to get my wisdom teeth removed soon, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

3.//Prepare For Post-Grad Life

PROGRESS SO FAR

  • Completed My Internship
  • Finished My Student Practicum Training For Severe Behavior
  • Decided That I Don’t Want To Go To Graduate School Immediately After College
  • Went To University Career Center Events

I did an ABA Therapy internship at Marcus Autism Center over the summer (I got the certificate to prove it), and it was one of the most eye-opening things I’ve done this year (which is saying a lot since 2019 has provided a lot of opportunities for me.) I had a lot of mentors and talked to them about graduate school, employment, and what my options are after graduating. After a lot of thought, I decided to not immediately go to grad school after college.

For starters, I’m going into a field where my employers will be willing to pay for my master’s degree program because they want their employees to work their way up. A lot of companies do this in varying fields, so you should look into that for your own. Also, many of the people I worked under who are currently in graduate school told me that grad school is a lot easier because of what they learned on the job. These are some of the factors that led to my decision.

As of right now, I’m still figuring out the process of applying for a job and what I’m going to do after college. I’ve already met with my advisor and applied for graduation in May, but there’s still a lot more I need to do in terms of life post-grad.

GOAL REFRESH – Prepare For Post Grad Life

  • Study For The GRE To Take Next Semester
  • Apply To Do An Internship In The Spring Semester
  • Figure out how to apply to jobs

Right now, I’m going to a lot of career center events hosted by my university. At the very least, they give me tips to share with you all in blog posts, and at the very best, they will help me get a job. I’m going to set a meeting with them to talk about my prospects and make a list of therapist offices and organizations I can apply to.  I’m kind of worried because I can’t leave Atlanta, so my options are limited to this area. I just need a place to start because I honestly don’t know what to do first (other than updating my resume and improving my LinkedIn Profile.)

Even though I don’t plan on starting grad school next fall, I want to get the GRE over with while I have the content fresh in my mind. It’ll be harder to study for when I (hopefully) start working a 9-to-5, which is why I’m aiming to take it a few times next year.

The final thing is to get an internship for spring. I don’t have many credit hours left, so I’ll be a part-time student next semester. Since I have time, I would like to do a speech pathology internship. I always say I’m open to options when it comes to getting a job with working with people with disabilities, but I’ve always leaned towards ABA. I want to explore a few more options before diving into my career.

4.//Post On Blog Once A Week

PROGRESS SO FAR

  • I posted one to two times per week on a semi-regular schedule

This has been going pretty well so far. I try to update every Tuesday, but that sometimes ends up happening on Wednesday. I would like to eventually increase this to two posts per week, but we’ll see how busy student life gets.

GOAL REFRESH – Continue Posting On Blog 1-2 Times Per Week

My current editorial calendar contains two posts per week. You will at the very least get a new blog post on Tuesdays, but I will try to post a second time every Friday or Saturday depending on my school work.

5.//Sell E-Course On Blog

PROGRESS SO FAR

  • I wrote an E-Book

I’ve actually written out an entire course in the last three months. I’m considering publishing it as an E-Book for you all to buy, but I may spend the next three months turning it into a course. Who knows? I’m considering postponing this goal into next year, but I’ve gotten so much done already. Ideally, this will be done by December, but as I said before, December will hopefully be another travel-filled month, so we’ll see.

GOAL REFRESH – Sell E-Course Or E-Book On Blog By January 2020

  • Create a Teachable account and create the course
  • Figure out how to design worksheets

This goal definitely contains more work than the others, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. I’ll try to make time to complete it.

6.//Read 100 Books In A Year [Read 12 Classics]

PROGRESS SO FAR

  • I’ve read 75 books thus far this year (I’m writing this early, but I should be done with 75 by the end of  September)
  • I have read 11 classics (Since the last update, I’ve read The Lion, The Witch, and the WardrobeThe House At Pooh CornerThe Alchemist, Mary Poppins, and Beauty and the Beast)

I am incredibly proud of how far I’ve come with this goal. If the trend continues, I’ll definitely finish 100 books by the end of the year. I’ve kind of veered away from the classics list I wrote in January, but that’s fine. Those were more like guiding books to give me an idea of what classics to read next. I do plan on finishing a majority of them. The only book on the list that I’ve DNFed is The Hobbit, but I plan on reading through the rest of my 2019 classics list. I’d also like to read Little Women before the movie comes out.

GOAL REFRESH – Read 100 Books In A Year

  • Finish 25 More Books
  • Get Through My Classics List (Here are the books that are left: Pride & PrejudiceThe Story of King Arthur & His Knights, The Picture of Dorian Gray, A Study In Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes), and Tarzan of the Apes)

I wouldn’t be surprised if I continued to veer away from my classics TBR, but I’ll try to stick with it. This is the goal I’ve enjoyed the most. At one point, the idea of reading 100 books in a year seemed impossible to me. Especially as a busy college student. There was a point in my life where I basically stopped reading because “I didn’t have time,” but I’ve watched significantly less Netflix and YouTube to make time for this hobby that I love.

That’s pretty much where I’m at right now. I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished this year. After putting in so much work, a lot of things are coming together for me. We have a little over 90 days left this year, so make them count. I know I will.
