Some Memories From Camping In The Swiss Alps

Hello, lovelies! How is quarantine life going? It’s been over a week since I moved out of my dorm, and I haven’t left the house since then. The pollen count is also incredibly high right now, so I’ve been okay with not going outside thus far. I’m mainly just trying to figure out what’s next and scheduling out blog posts early. I was planning on catching up on my travel blog posts anyway, and I feel like this is a good distraction from the chaos.

I’ve reformatted how I’m going to talk about Switzerland multiple times. It was originally going to be a photo diary, where I inserted a gallery of all the photos I took while hiking, but as I’ve mentioned before, WordPress is being weird about my photos lately and I haven’t fixed it yet. I was only in Lauterbrunnen for three days and I don’t have any tips to give, so I decided to talk about some of the memories I have from the trip. I mentioned a few of them in the travel diary I wrote last summer, but it would be nice to have a specific post to look back on in a few years. I hope you enjoy.

1.//The First Freezing Night

Our first night camping in Switzerland was really f*cking cold. I didn’t change out of my clothes and wore both my jackets to sleep with socks on my hands. (It was mid-May, so I didn’t pack any gloves.) I remember waking up multiple times that night simply because I was freezing.

My tentmate and I learned our lesson that first night. She and I had only been friends for a few days at that point, but we became close real quick after basically sleeping on top of each other the next night. I’ve already told this story, but it was a memorable experience. The rest of the times we camped felt like a cakewalk compared to this. I wore leggings under my jeans the entire time I was in Switzerland.

2.//Dancing At A Bar Because It Was The Only Warm Place Nearby

There was a bar right next to our campsite where everyone hung out at night. It was full of backpackers and the drinks were so overpriced that my friends and I never bought any. It was a very rustic looking bar and there were so many people on the dance floor. I dragged all of my friends there to dance with me. There were a bunch of lounge areas, too, so we got to meet and get acquainted with other people in our tour group along with other travelers passing through. Those were some really fun nights.

3.//Hiking All Day

Hiking is the best, and hiking in Switzerland is even better. My friends and I all packed lunch and started walking. We bought Swiss chocolate from a grocery store then hiked through the mountains for hours. Some people were adamant about seeing snow and hiked fo a lot longer than we did, but my friends and I didn’t want to hike that high and were content walking around, taking in all the scenery, and hanging out. We did pay to go inside parts of the mountains and see waterfalls inside. They took us up in an elevator shaft with a glass ceiling so we could see how high we were going. That was really cool. After finding a place to sit and eat lunch, we walked back toward the campsite.

4.//Just Chilling Outside Without Wifi

We didn’t have access to Wifi for the majority of our time in Switzerland. It was so refreshing. I called my parents using the tour bus’s Wifi while we were setting up camp to tell them I wouldn’t be able to call them and not to worry (I called them every morning and every evening while I was there), then barely used my phone. After hiking, my friends and I went to a cafe to get brownies and hot chocolate (Swiss hot chocolate is amazing!) and it was the only place with Wifi and there was a moment where I looked around and all six of us were on our phones. We put them down pretty soon after that, but I thought it was funny. I called my parents and texted my friends for a bit, then enjoyed the warm cafe.

Not having wifi also made it easier to talk to people. After I took a shower, I stayed in the bathroom building with one of my friends till our hair dried (because we refused to go out in the cold weather with wet hair) and talked to other girls at the campsite. In any other circumstance, everyone would be on their phones. It was just really nice. We’d lay in our tents and talk or walk around for a bit throughout the day. These were some of the more restful days during the trip because after that we were running around European cities trying to experience everything we could.

5.//Cows Walking On The Road

There were so many cows walking on the road and running in pastures. I took a bunch of cute videos of baby cows running around with the bells on their necks ringing. It’s the little things like that that make me smile.

6.//The Beautiful Scenery + Imagining Going Back

Everything was so beautiful there. The air was so crisp and windy, and there were log cabins everywhere. I kept imagining coming back in the future to rent one of those cabins and just spending a week relaxing, hiking and eating food with family and friends. It was just a really nice and beautiful place to be in.

Well, that’s it for now. This isn’t like the majority of the blog posts I write and I’ve mentioned bits and pieces of these stories before but this will be nice to look back on. Life is going to be crazy busy next month, so writing short and sweet posts like this are helping me out. Until next time!
