My Weekly College Studying Routine

Hello, lovelies. Today, I’m sharing my weekly study and homework routine as a college student. There are definitely days where I don’t finish all my work, but here’s how my weekly study routine ideally goes. I hope you enjoy.

//Monday

  • Review That Day’s Lectures – Otherwise,  I end up not reviewing the material again until it’s almost time for an exam. On Mondays, I review the notes from my Social Psychology, Cultures of South Asia, and Sense & Perception classes. This study step usually falls to the backburner on busy days.
  • Read And Take Notes On Psychology Seminar Articles 1&2 – This is a discussion-based class. Each week, a pair of students are assigned a topic to give a presentation on and discuss. They choose five articles that are posted the weekend before for us to read. My presentation and discussion were last week, and I’m so glad I was able to get it over with at the beginning of the semester (it’s worth 45% of my grade, so fingers crossed I did well). The discussion is usually shorter on Tuesday because a chunk of our class time is taken up for the presentation, which is why I only go through the first two articles on Mondays.
  • Read the Article for Psych of  Harry Potter – I was pleasantly surprised to find out at the beginning of the year that my Special Topics in Psychology class was focused on Harry Potter this semester (there’s a different topic every semester, and I lucked out. It’s basically a developmental psychology class with examples from the books. It’s super fun and kind of easy because I took developmental psychology in my sophomore year. The homework for this class usually isn’t that difficult. The articles aren’t super long and are pretty interesting. Sometimes we get assigned podcasts to listen to.
  • I Get Ahead On Monday’s Homework – Tuesdays and Thursdays are my busy days, so I try to get most of my work done on Mondays and Wednesdays since my classes end in the early afternoon.
  • I Finished All Of The Assignments For P.E. – I’m completing my P.E. requirement this semester. Along with the workout classes, there are a bunch of readings, quizzes, and assignments relating to nutrition, work-life balance, etc. I finished all of the readings and quizzes in the first week of school because they were short assignments I could finish in between taking care of my brothers, and I finished the application assignments by the first week of September. I’m glad I did that because now I won’t have to worry about P.E. for the rest of the semester.
  • I don’t have any music homework – I’m taking a chorus class to fulfill my experiential learning requirement (My internship doesn’t count since it wasn’t through my university), and this counts as experiential learning because there’s a concert at the end of the semester.  I don’t have any homework for it during the week. I just have to show up to the class and sing.

//Tuesday

  • Social Psychology Homework – My professor tends to assign homework one class before. Sometimes it’s reading an article and sometimes it’s writing a one-page response. The homework isn’t that bad, it’s just that I don’t have the opportunity to get it done early. Usually, on Tuesdays, I finish the homework assigned on Monday for this class.
  • Cultures of South Asia – This is the anthropology class I’m taking for my minor and it’s been really fun. There are two books we have to read for this semester. We’ve already finished the first book White Saris and Sweet Mangoes: Aging, Gender, and Body in North India by Sarah Lamb. We pretty much read a chapter before each class until we finished it. Now that we’ve finished it, I have to start outlining and writing the book report. We’ve already started the second book we’re discussing (we don’t have to write a book report on it) and our recent homework has been to read two chapters of it before each class.
  • Sense & Perception – This is the only class I have a textbook for. We have assigned readings from it for every class, so I try to take notes on all the chapters before the lesson. This doesn’t always happen, but this is my ideal studying routine. Not my “accidentally take a nap for two hours” study routine.
  • Review That Day’s Lectures – The only class where I need to review lectures is for the Harry Potter class. This usually entails rewriting my notes into my notebook. Normally, I don’t take out my laptop in class, but I have to for this one since there is a lot of content to copy down and the professors aren’t allowed to post all the slides (for copyright reasons, I guess). This is fine because rewriting the notes on paper helps me retain the knowledge, and it doesn’t take that long.

//Wednesday

  • Take Notes On Psychology Seminar Articles 3-5 – On Wednesdays, I read the last three articles for that week. I need to start writing more questions to ask based on the articles to participate more in the discussions (participation is a big part of our grade), but I can never think of many since I actually read the articles. Most of the answers are in the articles and I feel like asking stupid questions ruins the purpose and makes it look like I didn’t actually do the reading.
  • Psych Of Harry Potter Reading – Like I said before, the articles are pretty easy to read compared to my seminar articles, which are like 12-18 pages each. There are some classes where I can get by without reading all the articles, but the information from the articles in this class are actually in the exams, so I need to read them thoroughly.
  • Finish Homework For Friday – I’ll give more information on what assignments in the next point. I almost never get extra work done on Thursdays because I have other things to do.

//Thursday

Let’s pretend that I actually get work done on Thursdays. I have four classes and two club meetings, so the last thing I want to do is study. I usually end up finishing my last bits of homework, try to schedule a blog post for Friday (and fail), then go to sleep.

  • Social Psychology Homework – As I said before, my social psych professor assigns a lot of our work the class before it’s due, so there aren’t a lot of chances to get it done early (unless it’s to read an article, which he posts in advance.)
  • Cultural Anthropology Reading – I have a break before this class on Fridays, so I usually finish the chapters at this time when I’m too tired to do the reading the day before.
  • Sense & Perception Homework – This is the homework I end up skipping on Thursdays when I don’t have time. As long as I read the textbook chapter before the test, I’m good, which is why I feel comfortable waiting until the weekend.

//Weekend

I do the majority of my weekend work on Sunday night because I go back to Atlanta most weekends. That time is reserved for work and spending time with my family. I don’t like doing school work there unless I have to. Here’s my typical studying routine.

  • Social Psychology PackBack Response – This is the only homework that we all consistently know about. Every Sunday, we have a long response due asking questions like, “How can bad people be made to do bad things?” and we have to relate things we learned from an article about terrorism. The response is usually something along the lines of that. Some responses are harder than others.
  • Cultures of South Asia Reading – We almost always have readings for this class. They usually take less than an hour and it’s not busy work since we actually discuss them every class period.
  • Take Notes On Sense & Perception Chapter – I try to get ahead on my textbook notes on Sunday since I have 7-10 articles to read during the week for other classes. This is the homework that ends up being lowest on my priority list during the week since there isn’t an actual due date.
  • Start Studying For Any Exams Or Quizzes I Have That Week – This generally entails making a study plan for the said exam and starting a study guide if the professor provided one.

Well, that’s my studying routine for the week. I complete it in a timely manner 80% of the time depending on my schedule, which is good enough for me. I hope you all enjoyed this post, and I’ll see you next time!
