My Grad School Morning Routine

Hello, lovelies! Today, I’m going to talk about my current morning routine doing graduate school online. I remember one of my favorite things about the days I had afternoon classes in college (which were rare) was that I was able to ease into my day. My roommate would usually be out of the room when I woke up. I could get dressed, stretch, drink my tea and watch something on my laptop while eating breakfast. It was amazing and such a good start to my day before getting to work.

Now that I’m taking evening classes in grad school, I’m able to do this and more in the morning instead of going straight to work. This is honestly one of my favorite parts of my daily routine, and I hope it inspires you to ease into your day a little if you can.

//Wake Up + Chill In Bed

My phone’s alarm goes off at  8:30 AM. I charge it across the room so that I have to get out of bed to grab it. The thing is that this isn’t when I get ready for the day. I grab my phone and lay back in bed to snuggle in my blanket and stretch. I’m not even on my phone most of the time. I just check to see if any of my friends who wake up at 6 AM sent anything in the group chat then lay in bed until my alarm clock goes off at 9:00. I am typically much more awake by then. Especially since I keep my curtains open so that light can stream in through my window through the blinds.

When my alarm clock rings, I get out of bed much more awake and drink a big glass of water, which I keep next to my bed. Then I head to the bathroom I share with my brothers.

//Get Ready For The Day + Make Bed

I do the typical things when I get ready. I brush my teeth and wash my face. I’ve been using this face wash and these face cleansing pads these past few months for my acne. It’s been working pretty well for me. After doing that, I head back to my room, put moisturizer on my face and get dressed for the day. Sometimes I put on workout clothes immediately. Sometimes I don’t. It honestly depends on my mood.

After getting ready, I make my bed. I do this every day because I don’t feel ready for my day until I do it. I also open the window blinds.

//Make Breakfast & Tea

If I plan on working out immediately, I’ll only eat a banana and water then eat a proper breakfast after exercising. I’m usually not hungry in the mornings, but I’ve been trying to make sure I eat something more  than a banana because I end up snacking less later on in the day.

Most days recently, I’ve been eating breakfast. It’s usually an omelet with onions, spinach and chile (with salt and a little milk), and a cup of tea with a croissant. If I’m hungry enough, I’ll also eat a banana. Drinking tea every day has not been my best habit in quarantine because I drink cha now (which you guys call “chai”) instead of the herbal tea or green tea I drank in college. I used to mainly drink those teas without any sweeteners, but now I have tea with milk and sugar every day. That added sugar really isn’t good for me, so I’m trying to alternate between cha and herbal teas each day.

Sometimes I eat waffles or hash browns or turkey bacon for breakfast, too. It honestly depends on the day. I mainly stick to the omelet and the banana though.

//Eat Breakfast & Watch T.V or Help My Brother With School

After I make my breakfast, I usually sit on the couch and watch an episode of a show or part of a movie while I eat. I normally don’t finish what I’m watching. I don’t really watch that much T.V. now that school has started, but I’m trying to make it part of my routine because it’s relaxing to just sit and watch a movie for awhile. I’ve recently started to start a movie in the morning, watch some more of it in the afternoon, then finish the movie at night. I don’t necessarily recommend this, but it’s been working for me.

Most of the time, I switch off with  my mom to help my brother with online school. He is in special education, so my mom usually sits with him most of the school day to help him with his work. After making breakfast, I sit at the dining table with him while my mom gets other things done and eat breakfast. I don’t need to pay attention to the class. I just need to prompt him to answer the questions when he needs to. Otherwise, I am watching a movie or show on my phone while I eat (with the subtitles on).

//Work Out

Once I finish breakfast, I usually wait a little bit before working out. When Mysoon’s class period ends and he has a break, I go downstairs to see my grandparents. After talking to them for a bit, I use the T.V in the downstairs living room to workout. Most of the time, I put up a dance video for cardio, an ab workout video, then do a weightlifting video for either arm or leg day. There will be a blog post on my home workout routine soon, but here’s a link to my favorite workout channel right now.

//Shower

After exercising, I walk my very sweaty ass to the shower. If my grandma puts oil in my hair, I usually wait an hour before showering. My showers are pretty short now. Like 10-15 minutes. I don’t really like showering anymore, which is a very weird thing that started during quarantine. I still do it because I have oily hair and can’t go without washing it for more than two days without feeling gross. After showering, I put lotion all over my body and change into my regular clothes for the day. I don’t get much done when I wear pajamas or sweat pants, so I try to get fully dressed.

//Read For One Hour

I noticed that it’s a lot harder for me to read at night now. Normally, I end up working until I go to sleep or I just watch a movie or T.V. show. I decided to start reading in the morning instead to start my day off on the right foot. I set a timer for fifteen minutes then restart it four times. I noticed that setting a timer for an hour felt more daunting, so I approach it as, “I have time to read for fifteen minutes.” then “fifteen more minutes.” Otherwise, I end up deciding that I need to start working immediately and don’t have any time to read. Doing this in the morning forces me to make time for it.

//Tidy Room Before Getting To Work

It’s usually around noon by the time I finish reading. Before getting to work, I do a quick 5-minute tidy of my room because there’s usually a small pile of clothing or something somewhere. Doing this every day keeps my room somewhat organized.

My “working hours” are typically from 12-8:30, and I organize my breaks, classes. and blogging time within that. I try to finish all my important tasks before dinner so that I don’t have to think about it the rest of the night. Sometimes there’s one or two things left, but the majority of my evening is spent relaxing and I end up moving those tasks to the next day. Typically there are one or two days in the week where I work till I go to sleep after midnight, but I try to avoid that.

And that’s pretty much  my morning routine. I love it because I get two big things done before I start working: exercising and reading. It already feels like a day worth spent and I don’t have to worry about when to squeeze those habits into my daily schedule.
